The renewal of the former Sears Canada head office at 222 Jarvis Street, Toronto, is inching closer to completion. While this fascinating example of brutalist architecture was expected to be move-in ready by the end of 2011, it looks like workers are still putting on finishing touches.
The most obvious exterior change is the addition of a multi-storey glass curtain – designed by WZMH Architects – which defines the Jarvis St. entrance. A recent Globe and Mail article reports that while four Ontario government ministries prepare to move into the building, the province has put it up for sale and intends to lease the space from the future owner.
I was fortunate enough to tour the building in 2010 before construction began. Read about it here.
